Knauf launches public tender to raise stake in Chiyode Ute

Japan: Germany-based Knauf Group has launched a public tender offer to increase its stake in the Japanese wallboard producer Chiyode Ute from 50% to 75%. Knauf is the largest wallboard producer by installed capacity outside of China.
Speaking to Global Gypsum, Chiyode Ute’s Vice President and Representative Director Frederick Knauf said that the founding family Hirata would retain a 25% stake in the company. He added “For Knauf Group this is very exciting. Japan is the world’s third-largest wallboard market and one in which Chiyode Ute has a 20% market share. It is also a challenging market, where customers expect the best in terms of quality, delivery and customer service. We will continue to work with the Hirata family to further develop the company’s capabilities to better serve this demanding market in the future. Chiyoda Ute will be fully integrated into the Knauf Group.”
Saint-Gobain and Dalsan to merge Turkish gypsum wallboard operations

Turkey: France-based Saint-Gobain and building materials producer Dalsan have signed a joint-venture agreement, pursuant to which they will merge their gypsum wallboard operations in Turkey. The merge will give the new joint venture a gypsum wallboard production capacity of over 100Mm2/yr. It will also see the companies’ plaster production consolidated under their new subsidiary.
The partners said “This partnership will offer Turkish customers access to the most innovative and complete portfolio of light and sustainable solutions for the construction and renovation of the building envelope, as well as internal partitioning.”
Alina Group to commission new gypsum wallboard plant in Almaty in 2022

Kazakhstan: Alina Group plans to invest US$112,000 in the construction of a gypsum wallboard ‘mini factory’ in Almaty Region. Kazakhstan Newsline has reported that the company expects to commission the facility in 2022. The group is already engaged in the construction of two building materials plants in the region, at a total investment cost of US$35.9m.
ML Environmental Group secures Scott Equipment Company distribution contract

US: ML Environmental Group has secured a strategic partnership and exclusive US distribution agreement with gypsum wallboard recycling technology producer Scott Equipment Company. Scott Equipment Company produces the GypStream paper backing removal system. Together, the companies say that they will expand the gypsum wallboard recycling solutions offering available to US customers.
Scott Equipment Company business development and product marketing manager Kevin Pedretti said "Our recycling systems, including both the food waste organics recovery system and the gypsum wallboard separation and recovery machines, position nicely with ML Environmental Group's vision to offer their customers an end-to-end solution.” He continued "We have been very impressed with the leadership and growth of ML Environmental and look forward to making the world a better place with this partnership."
Russian invasion of Ukraine increases Mexican gypsum prices by up to 12%

Mexico: The price of gypsum and its derivatives has risen by up to 12% in April 2022 compared to pre-Russian invasion of Ukraine levels. Along with a rise in the price of other materials, this has increased the cost of new house builds by 25 – 30%.
The Mexican Ministry of Foreign Affairs has reported that Russia was previously Mexico’s 35th largest trade partner.
