France: Saint-Gobain Placo has launched Glasroc X 13, a ‘three-in-one’ gypsum wallboard for use in façades and exterior shells for wood-frame structures. The producer says that the board embodies three key benefits for wooden construction applications: fire protection, weather resistance and stability. It can be left uncovered for up to six months before cladding, and is available in 1200mm or 1250mm widths.
Knauf España launches new oversize systems products
16 February 2024Spain: Knauf España has expanded its range of oversize gypsum wallboard systems with the launch of its new Maxiboard boards. The producer said that the boards’ 900mm thickness allows for a 30% reduction in studs, screws and joint treatment in installation. Maxiboard boards are optimal for use in large spaces, including in shopping centres, cinemas and data centres. They offer EI 240-certified fire resistance in systems up to 6m high and EI 120-certified fire resistance in systems up to 11m high.
UK: Saint-Gobain subsidiary British Gypsum has launched its BIMlocker software, a tool to enhance the use of its building information modelling (BIM) objects. The company says that BIMlocker improves customers’ data accuracy and accountability. The tool integrates with existing Revit software.
Head of digital construction Paul French said "Demonstrating compliance, accountability and integrity has never been more important within our industry. Our new BIMlocker software provides reassurance as an invisible layer of security that acts as a valuable aid to construction supply chains in the Building Safety Act era. It eliminates any ambiguity and ensures complete transparency."
Germany: Grenzebach has expanded its portfolio by acquiring the technology to build its own special hammer mill, previously sourced from Beumer Group subsidiary FAM Minerals & Mining. The hammer mill processes particle sizes of 0 – 50mm, with a throughput of up to 50t/hr. The acquisition also covers technology for the dynamic classifier. Grenzebach says that it will continue to further develop its portfolio of calcination line components, focused on energy efficiency, carbon reduction and digitisation.
CEO Robert Brier said “We are constantly looking for ways to optimise our customer orientation. That is why we were very interested in expanding our portfolio and ultimately acquired the technology.”

British Gypsum wallboard partition systems granted Code for Construction Product Information mark
29 September 2023UK: British Gypsum’s non-loadbearing metal stud plasterboard partition systems, including shaft walls, have become one of the first products on the local market to carry the Code for Construction Product Information (CCPI) mark. The scheme is intended to provide assurance to end users that the product information for these products is clear, accurate, accessible, up-to-date and unambiguous.
The CCPI was initiated by the Construction Product Association (CPA) as a direct response to Judith Hackitt’s review of Building Regulations and Fire Safety set up in the wake of the Grenfell Tower fire in 2017. The CPA is a UK-based construction industry trade association.
Adaptavate raises Euro2.3m in funding to support commercialisation of bio-based alternative wallboard
03 August 2023UK: Adaptavate has raised around Euro2.3m in its latest investment round. This investment round has been led by Counteract, with Low Carbon Innovation Fund 2 (LCIF2), Semin and Perivoli Innovations. It follows Adaptavate’s previous seed funding round, announced in March 2022, and subsequent support received to industrialise the development of carbon negative construction materials including developing industrial processes to make low-carbon and carbon absorbing plaster and wallboard.
The company is currently building a development centre, including laboratories and a pilot production, line in Bristol and conducting research to complete testing and licencing programmes for its Breathaboard product. Breathaboard is a gypsum-free wallboard manufactured from compostable crop waste. Adaptavate intends to start use Breathaboard produced on the new line in pilot construction projects by the end of 2023. The new funding will also be used to develop other sustainable building products. The company is additionally looking to licence its technology to the large building products manufacturers and has already started conversations with potential partners.
Tom Robinson, the chief executive officer and founder of Adaptavate, said “This funding round is a pivotal point in the acceleration of Adaptavate and our aim to be the world leader in this space. With the support of like-minded funding partners, we are leading the carbon revolution of building materials as a form of carbon capture and utilisation. What I am most pleased about is that this funding round was oversubscribed, which shows the appetite for near to market, industrially scalable carbon absorbing technologies, even at an economically challenging time.”
Japan: Chiyoda-Ute plans to mark the packaging of its gypsum wallboard product with a ‘green electricity’ mark when it has been manufactured at a plant using electricity generated from a renewable source. The company first started using electricity supplied from sustainable sources at its Yokkaichi wallboard plant in April 2023. It intends to extend this to its other plants in the near future.
Albér Gypsum develops sprayable gypsum ‘board’
22 June 2023US: Albér Gypsum has developed an adhesive gypsum-based plaster ‘board’ product that can be used in place of traditional gypsum wallboard. Using the new process gypsum powder is first mixed with water into a mixture lightweight cement sprayer. The company has also designed a special spray gun for this purpose. The plaster is then sprayed onto the wall construction or/and insulation, evened out and left to dry for up to six hours. A patent is currently pending for the new method.
The developer says that the gypsum-based plaster product eliminates air pockets in a wall, covers electrical wires and tubes thereby reducing fire risk and is stronger than traditional wallboard. It takes half the installation time of regular wallboard and does not require fittings such as bolts or nails. The company says that the sprayable plaster creates less waste, is easily recyclable and does not use paper. Not using paper also prevents any cases of black mould. The gypsum mix used can be modified to create a harder or softer surface depending on the desired room acoustics.
