Russian-occupied Ukraine: Knauf's gypsum wallboard was reportedly used in the on-going reconstruction of Mariupol in Russian-occupied Donetsk Oblast. Monitor Magazine News has reported that Knauf’s ‘official distributors’ in the city have supplied customers including the Russian Ministry of Defence. Russian forces took the city of 400,000 people following a siege in February – May 2022.
Knauf told Agence France-Presse that it ‘respects all the EU, UK and US sanctions against Russia.’
Egypt: The Egyptian government plans to expand the country’s Golden Triangle Economic Zone (GTEZ), a development region centred on mineral extraction. Gypsum is among the key products of the GTEZ, alongside phosphate, iron and gold. Zawya Projects News has reported that the government aims to establish a ‘comprehensive economic hub’ in the zone, including the development of residential, commercial and leisure facilities.
Kazakhstan: Alina Group plans to invest US$112,000 in the construction of a gypsum wallboard ‘mini factory’ in Almaty Region. Kazakhstan Newsline has reported that the company expects to commission the facility in 2022. The group is already engaged in the construction of two building materials plants in the region, at a total investment cost of US$35.9m.
Uzbekistan: The government has shared plans for the establishment of a new building materials production cluster in Bukhara Region. Activities within the cluster will include gypsum extraction.
